Mommy, what is cancer?
That was the question I was asked on the way to tap last night. My daughter has two little friends whose mother's have cancer.
What is cancer, darling? well...
Cancer is what seeps into your soul and can destroy you. Cancer is what we use as a metaphor for sin. Cancer ultimately can make you so sick you eventually die. Is that what I want to tell my almost 7 year old?
I didn't know what to say. We talked about cancer making you sick. We talked about it not being contagious. We talked about it sometimes never going away. And then we talked about Heaven.
Heaven. With my almost 7 year old, how do I explain to her that yes, on earth people get cancer, get so sick that it eventually hurts their body so badly they die, but then you to a place that's better then your best day here on Earth? Better then Disney. Better then the most beautiful beach you ever saw. Better then the gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. Better. You leave this place and you go to something better.
"Mommy, do people have cancer still in Heaven?"
No, Darling, they don't.
"Mommy, do people get hungry in Heaven?"
No, Darling, they don't.
"Mommy, are people mean in Heaven?"
No, Darling, they aren't.
"So it's the best day ever?"
Yes, that's what Heaven is better then the best day ever. So much better.
I struggle with my understanding for suffering. But I have to believe he calls us to something better. And I know that he gives us grace here while we wait. He does this because he loves us.
A friend posted this video on facebook this morning. FYI Heaven is better then that! WOW!

Thank you God for your grace abounding in your nature around us. I one day hope to see Yosemite. But I long for Heaven. Because seeing Yosemite and it's beauty is unnecessary when you have the glory of Heaven around you.

WOW this just made me tear a bit. I think you did a great job answering her question. I have no idea how I would even start. My mom is very very sick with everything wrong and my son Ethan who is 4 asks certain things but nothing I haven't been able to handle. When my grandma passed last September I talk alot about heaven and he knows about it but didn't get to detail with questions. I'm scared if my mom passes because they are so close and talk to one another daily.
